    Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a vast temple tank in Madurai, noted for its size and the annual float festival. Built in 1645 by King Thirumalai Nayak, the tank covers a large area and is fed by the Vaigai River via underground channels. A granite mandapam with a small Vinayaka shrine stands at the centre, reached by a causeway. Twelve wide stone steps on all sides lead down to the water, creating a dramatic setting. The tank is particularly famous for the Teppam or float festival held in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February), when idols from Meenakshi Temple are taken on decorated floats. At other times visitors come to enjoy the serene ambiance, watch the reflections of the sky in the water and relax on the steps.

Heat, crowds and breaks

Use shade, meals and rest as route decisions rather than afterthoughts. A shorter sequence completed comfortably is more useful than adding every optional stop. Confirm current attraction conditions directly before leaving.
