Kazimar Big Mosque is the oldest mosque in Madurai, built in the 13th century by Hazrat Kazi Syed Tajuddin, a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. The whitewashed structure, set amidst narrow lanes near the Periyar bus stand, houses a large prayer hall, an Arabic college and the Maqbara (tombs) of revered saints.
