Koodal Azhagar Temple: Sacred Vishnu Shrine in Madurai
Also known as Koodal Alagar Temple
Koodal Azhagar Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desam shrines of Lord Vishnu and a major landmark in Madurai. Located near the city centre, the temple features a five‑tiered rajagopuram and an intricately carved Ashtanga Vimanam (eight‑storey tower) over the sanctum. It is dedicated to Lord Koodal Azhagar (Vishnu) and his consort Madhuravalli Thayar. Built during the Pandya dynasty and expanded by Vijayanagar rulers and the Nayak kings, the temple is praised in early Tamil literature. Visitors can admire the granite enclosures, beautifully carved pillars and separate shrines for the seated, standing and reclining forms of Vishnu. Festivals such as the annual Brahmotsavam (May–June) and the float festival draw large crowds.
